Spin #123 : 1999 : Prince

SUNDAY DROP - SPIN # 123 FROM THE R'NR WITH RYLO RECORD COLLECTION

Monday was a really nice day, because it was our daughters 3rd birthday. She had such a nice afternoon and dinnertime after school. We opened presents and even played pin the carrot nose on the snowman from the movie, Frozen. It was difficult to get the kids to sleep though because they were so pumped up from the birthday excitement. Thank you to my mum and dad who helped out with a Frozen themed cake.

If you are here reading our spin this week, you might have noticed that I didn't post a MWSP or social post for 'It's Vinyl Friday'. I will keep doing the blog, so we can capture the week that was, but I was getting a bit behind with everything and I realised that I don't need to do the social posts. At least for now. I'm hoping people will just click on our linktree and visit to read what we have chosen for our spin this week. If no one does, then that's fine by me too. I started this blog so I could capture moments with my family and talk about music that we love. Especially some of those records that we own in our collection.

I've even been thinking about different ways to fortify our future and what else I can do to bring in some money. Of course, it's not all about money and I'm remembering what is important. One of those important things is to have hobbies and things that you love that give you time to rest and find solace. I'll dabble with the podcast again and might even work out how to do a show by myself. It was a lot of time and effort by Night Kat Kiz to edit and publish the first two episodes, so I'll need to sit down and work it all out. I've got some ideas of what to talk about and will keep those secret until I get around to recording again.

This week we are spinning our second Prince album titled, '1999'. A year that seems so long ago and it was released in the 1982. The vision of the man is astounding. I had some good moments with our son this week as we listened to this album. His favourite song currently is 'Austin (boots stop working) by artist, Dasha. It's a catchy song that gets him singing every time. He is such a character and always seems to dance and groove to anything. I'll have to ask him what his favourite song from '1999' was. I know that our kids loved the '3121' album by Prince and what are the odds that the two albums that we have placed on our turntable are the only two albums by Prince, that the titles are made of entirely numbers.

Now I didn't realise until listening to the album again this week, that there are serious undertones about the title track. He was singing about the impending doom of the millennium and references within the song, '1999' that "2000 zero zero party over oops out of time, so tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999". I can't tell you how many times I've heard this song and never clicked until reading the lyrics. References to "judgment day", "everybody having a bomb" and "war is all around us", offer some glimpse into the song. It all sounds so up-beat and happy and I hope I don't ruin the listening experience for anyone. I believe Prince was a fantastic artist and sadly I didn't get into his catalogue until after he passed on. Thankfully the remastered albums within his collection are on point - in terms of the colour of LP, production crispness and attention to detail.

If you listen closely to 'LITTLE RED CORVETTE', it also describes the lover as a fast car and a horse! Love the subtle Prince magic throughout the track and on the surface level the listener believes its just about a little red corvette. As a casual listener, it definitely has the two strongest songs leading off the album, similar to that of a baseball lineup whilst hitting. Nothing bad about leading off the album with some home runs. The music is so very '80s and futuristic at the same time. There are a couple of photographs on the record slip cases that are classic Prince, meaning that I had to include at least one.

Our little family has achieved some goals this week - mounted a replacement television, thrown out some rubbish by council clean up and found time to enjoy the moments. Caught up with family and friends and even found time to put some future moves in place. 'D.M.S.R' has the funk that my soul so desperately needed. It was filling up the room with some timely Prince grunts, screams and sex sounds. One that makes you nod your head and have the 'Funk-Face' on. I dare you to listen to this one and sit still...........IMPOSSIBLE!. What does D.M.S.R stand for I heard you ask? "Dance, music, sex, romance". Favourite song on the album for me.

This week we were talking about the Moon around the dinner table and what it was made of. Of course, we told our son that it was made of cheese from the Space Cows. He laughed and said, "No Dad, it's made of metal. I know because I went up there in my rocket ship and knocked on it". We got to a point where we both laughed and agreed that snow was frozen milk from the Space Cows udders. Only kidding, he looked at me and I could read his thoughts....."Dad, you're silly". I'm not afraid to poke a bit of fun at myself and I think it's important to be silly sometimes. We aren't robots. Another track that I think really works with Prince's vocals is 'FREE'. I like the chorus and the lyrics throughout and there is a feeling of Queen here (for me anyway). 'LADY CAB DRIVER' hits hard with the funk too and is a close second to best track on the album for me. Everyone seems to say the title track or 'LITTLE RED CORVETTE', but I like the choose something different as I'm not vanilla.

Thanks for listening this week with Night Kat Kiz, our kids and I. There is enough to enjoy across '1999', that I feel you should own a copy in your collection. It's not my favourite Prince album though and I think that is because he had such a large volume of greatness. Trying to get through his studio albums via streaming is a daunting task. If you were wondering, he had roughly 40 studio albums released. I'm sure that I'll add a few more of his to the R'nR collection before my time is done.

Until our next Spin.....
