SUNDAY DROP - SPIN # 129 FROM THE R'NR WITH RYLO RECORD COLLECTION
The Beatles were an iconic British rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960, eventually consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They'd become one of the most influential and successful bands in the history of popular music. Some might say, The "toppermost of the poppermost". Their innovative music, which blended elements of rock, pop, and other genres, revolutionized the music industry and left a lasting impact on generations of fans. I really love all of their albums and respect how much they achieved in such a short period of time. They were exhausted and a way to continue the upward trajectory, was to release a concept album. Yes it was heavily influenced with the use of psychedelics, but hats off to them for what they achieved. If you listen closely, you will realise that there aren't any gaps between the tracks. The band wanted to provide an experience for the listener, as if they were watching a new band at one of their live shows. For this Sunday drop, we will be placing the LP of 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' on our turntable and dropping the stylus!
'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' as an album was a groundbreaking and iconic record released by The Beatles in 1967. This album marked a significant shift in the band's musical style, as they moved away from their traditional pop sound to experiment with new and innovative techniques. The cover art of the album is also widely recognised and considered one of the most iconic in music history, featuring The Fab Four dressed in colorful military-style outfits surrounded by a diverse group of famous figures. There is a lot to look at and the inclusion of the lyrics on the reverse of the jacket means you'll most likely never put it down during the listening experience.
The Beatles managed to showcase a wide range of influences, from rock and roll to Indian influenced classical music, and include timeless classics such as 'LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS', 'A DAY IN THE LIFE', 'WHEN I'M SIXTY-FOUR' and 'A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS'. 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' is often hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time, praised for its creativity, musicality, and cultural impact. Gone were the days of those mop-top four. They'd seen creativity and experimentation in all of it's forms and wanted more. This would become even more evident on albums - 'Magical Mystery Tour' (1967) and 'The Beatles (White)' (1968) released shortly after.
The inclusions within this remastered copy are a nice touch. They have some cut outs of Sgt. Pepper himself, a moustache and some insignia that you can put on your sleeves. Don't worry guys, I know that he is a fictitious character created only for the purpose of this concept album. I think I read somewhere a few years back that someone asked for some salt and pepper and Paul thought they said, Sergeant Pepper, which ended up being the catalyst. Included is a booklet explaining who is who on the front cover and some notes of each song's recording process. Lots to devour for music lovers while you listen along and I noticed one new thing while holding the booklet today. There is an image of the band and each of them are looking in different directions (have a look below).
What has been your favourite song on the album? Probably a better question to ask is, how many people can you name on the front cover of this album? I have to admit that I didn't know majority of them when I found out who they were. Paul said to the lads, "come up with people who would influence your persona for the album and add them to the list". George had added a lot of spiritual guru's and John wanted to add Jesus and Hitler at one stage. The stone figure at the lower right is actually from one of John's houses and meant to be 'Sgt. Pepper'. Can you believe a few people didn't give them permission to use their likeness and refused to be on the cover. Imagine having the opportunity to be on one of the BEST covers of all time and knocking the fab four back.
Our 5 year old and 3 year old have had a big week (I can see it in their sleepy eyes), however they are ready to dance. There was a nice moment at the dinner table this week where our daughter stood up and said, "look at me, my bottom is dancing". The song that got them dancing and laughing was 'Plug In Baby' by Muse. I set up a speaker for them to listen to music on and our son became a sound technician. He has to put the speaker in the perfect place, correct sound, with bass and treble. It's impressive to watch to be honest for a 5 year old. The only issue is, he has to constantly choose songs or try and control my phone. I think I've said this before but incase I haven't, his favourite type of music currently is Country. Probably his go-to album right now is Dasha - 'What Happens Now?' or Ernest - 'Nashville, Tennessee'. Ones that we will need to eventually add to the R'nR collection. I included a photo taken during the week of our son dressed in his Spider-Man jumper and beanie pulled down like the webslingers mask. He loved it, until he couldn't see where he was going. It's a beanie, not a mask. I'll have to look into some Halloween costumes this week for when we take the kids trick-or-treating. It'll be our daughters first time and I think she will have a lot of fun.
Yesterday we made use of some outdoor time and made things with playdough. The kids had so much fun creating with Night Kat Kiz and I and they managed to make a dinosaur, frog, evil carrot and pea from the 'Supertato' books/show. We played hopscotch and made some pirate themed lunch before winding down. During hopscotch, our daughter came straight towards me and said, "Hey Dad, I'm grumpy with you. Your a bad boy". Then we both laughed because she has been stringing more sentences together lately. The wind ended up being a bit too much and we put on a pirate themed movie for them to relax. Night Kat Kiz was telling me a story of our youngest Rylo that happened during the week and I wanted to add it to the time capsule blog.
Our 3 year old daughter ran up to Night Kat Kiz in the kitchen and said, "Mum run quickly". Night Kat Kiz said, "Why?". Daughter said, "There is a bear, quickly run". The ladies then ran into the front room and hid. Our daughter told Night Kat Kiz that bears like to eat marshmallows, so she quickly thought to say, "Quickly, there's a tree full of marshmallows in the loungeroom" and started to pick marsh mellows to throw towards the bear. The bear was happy and our daughter was happy using her imagination.
After this one we might put on a couple more records or have some time in the sunshine. The kids love playing outside and fingers crossed these destructive winds keep away for a while. All it does is cause problems, particularly in an old house. One thing that I can control is my fitness and I challenged myself recently to wake up early and make some time on the treadmill. Followed by some breakfast, light stretching and weights. I don't want to be massive or anything but I do want to have tone again and feel healthier. Night Kat Kiz and I will have Summer bods in no time! Until then, make sure that you hug your loved ones and do things that make you happy. I hope that you are enjoying the new 'Let's Get Lyrical' Friday night fun too. If you don't get it, don't worry because I reveal it on Saturday nights. For all our post times, please see the pinned poster on our Instagram or on the front page of our website. Thanks for listening to The Beatles with us and keeping their spirit alive. Hard to believe that all they achieved was in such a short time together. Thankfully we did get some amazing solo albums from them after and if you are still looking for more music, then you should go down that rabbit hole.
Forgot to mention that the modern day equivalent to this album and concept, or the closest that I've seen anyone come, would be My Chemical Romance - 'The Black Parade'. This would also have to be one of my favourite albums of all time and one that you should check out.
Until our next Spin.....
