SUNDAY DROP - SPIN # 135 FROM THE R'NR WITH RYLO RECORD COLLECTION
I didn't think that one day I would own a copy of Justin Timberlake's 'FutureSex/LoveSounds' on vinyl. The medium that was most popular at time of its release was on was compact disc (CD) and purchasing through iTunes (Apple). I'm still a bit dirty with iPod and how they nerfed them so badly. I lost a lot of good music on that ol' click wheel, but it adds to the fact just how important it is to buy physical media. This record was huge in 2006 and had a big impact at parties and end of year events. Other notable albums that shaped my final year at school were - 'Inside In/Inside Out' by The Kooks, 'Black Holes and Revelations' by Muse, 'Alright, Still' by Lily Allen, 'Eyes Open' by Snow Patrol, 'Amputechture' by The Mars Volta, 'The Black Parade' by My Chemical Romance, 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' by The Arctic Monkeys, 'Back to Black' by Amy Winehouse.
I wouldn't call myself a major fan of JT's work. He had some big singles from his album 'Justified' that were played everywhere but I haven't heard much from his albums after 'FutureSex/LoveSounds'. I guess it was an album that stood out at the time and that I needed to hear it. Looking at the tracklisting on the back of the jacket, I'd say that 'SEXYBACK' and 'MY LOVE' were the first ones that sucked me in. Timberland and JT have put together a classic '00s album that is mixed and released to the highest standards. He has always been a entertaining showman and dancer and owes a lot of his success to Michael Jackson to be honest.
I'll put it to you to name an album or a song released by JT that came out after this 2006 album. I honestly wasn't able to answer my own question either. Maybe one day I will go through his studio albums and see if those resonate with me as much as 'FutureSex/LoveSounds' did. I was looking at the front album artwork, as the sounds of first song and title track started playing, wondering to myself if he hurt his foot/leg by putting his foot through the disco ball? There is no lyric sheet included but JT looks like he had a lot of fun smashing up disco balls with his feet and a sledgehammer (as seen in the photo's). It's been a while since hearing this album in full and the delight and memories linked to it are good. For example, whenever 'SEXYBACK' played, everyone knew that I'd be up on the dancefloor to that one. I've lost count how many times I've danced to that song. I remember walking towards the dancefloors backwards and being a goof....but it was fun. The album has a good pace to it and hearing the full song of 'WHAT GOES AROUND..........COMES AROUND' was much better than the radio edit that always played in the car.
I asked our son if he liked what he heard from the album and he was grooving around the room like a hybrid Mick Jagger and MC Hammer. I liked that even the filler tracks or interludes felt right across the album and is best listened in its entirety. The littlest Rylo (our 3 year old daughter) has been growing a lot this week and didn't want anything to do with this one. I know she will like it if she listens to the album later, but she is in a threenager mood.
I think the tracks, 'LOVESTONED' and 'DAMN GIRL' are severely underrated and feel that it didn't get spoken about a lot. Please let me know in the comments below or on our socials, what your favourite song is from the album. So this week on the home front we managed to dress the kids up in their Halloween outfits for trick-o-treating around our streets. It was our daughters first time and she was dressed as Princess Anna from Frozen. Our son was dressed as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and chose Mikey's orange eye mask for the walk. Originally we weren't going to go, because he had received a yellow card at school earlier in the week. Night Kat Kiz and I had a big discussion with him about his behaviour and he told us that he was sorry and that he would listen at school more. We also had another of his friends birthday parties on Saturday, this time at Flip Out. The kids had a lot of fun and it was nice seeing their little faces. Our daughter actually wanted me to bounce on the trampoline with her and it was a nice change. She always wants Mummy, so it was a nice Daddy + Daughter moment.
On Friday I got to see a bit of his athletics carnival and he had a go at all of the events on offer. They included a sack race, chicken toss into a bucket, long jump, high jump, egg and spoon race, sprint race, tug-o-war, parachute, foam javelin and was exhausted after all of that. He gave everything a good go and Night Kat Kiz got to see him do all of the activities. I think his favourite was the egg and spoon race! We'' I hope that you all had a good Halloween on Thursday and didn't get harassed by bad kids who only offered tricks. We had a good group of kids turn up and watched some spooky movies last night. We have been watching a show on ABC Kids called, 'Spooky Files' and the kids are still enjoying it. It makes our son laugh so much.
Can you believe that it's already November and that we have Christmas next month! Where has 2024 gone? Have you got any albums that you believe are 'Album of the Year' worthy? If you do, please chat to us about some of your favourites. I feel last year I had a lot of albums that I loved and I'll have to have a sit-down one night with headphones on and decide my favourite release for the year. Well the stylus has reached the dead wax and signals another Sunday Spin has been completed. Make sure to check out this album if you weren't lucky enough to hear it back in 2006 and add it to your LP collection if you can. I almost forgot to mention how Night Kat Kiz showed our son rockets and how they take off and land etc. He was so amazed that he made his own launchpad and rocket system, including binoculars to watch the take-off (see gallery below). They also had fun playing out the back yard and every time they dunked the basketball hoop they would yell out, "Dunks". So very cute. They created a mud kitchen and got very very dirty today actually. Although they somehow managed to fling mud onto the washing hanging on the line, they got some good mud time. I record these moments because this is a music blog/time capsule for all of us and I want to re-read all of these adventures in the future. If I ever lose my memory....this might help to remember.
Hug your loved ones and spin records every week. It really lifts the spirits to do things that you love and I think we all need a bit of happiness right now. We will catch you next week with another LP from the R'nR with Rylo collection and if Thirsty Merc are reading this.....please release your albums on wax!!!!!
Until our next Spin.....
